Affect millions of mericans. The Sleep Center at EASTAR Health System’s East campus offers diagnosis and treatment of the following conditions:
A person with sleep apnea has periods when they briefly stop breathing. Episodes may last at least 10 seconds and may occur anywhere from five to fifty times an hour. Sleep apnea is often associated with loud snoring, snorting, or even gasping for breath. Because it interrupts normal sleep cycles, people with sleep apnea often experience daytime sleepiness, memory and other intellectual difficulties, and depression.
Restless Leg Syndrome
With this disorder, legs (and even arms) move involuntarily during sleep. Often, uncomfortable sensations in the legs lead to an irresistible need to move the legs, which prevents the person from falling asleep. Patients may complain of insomnia, excessive sleepiness or both.
Sleep Problems in Children
Children with problems such as sleep apnea, insomnia or other sleep disorders can be diagnosed and treated at the Sleep Lab. The Lab is also a resource for families with children who experience problems such as sleep walking, nightmares and excessive snoring.
Up to one third of the U.S. population experiences insomnia, or difficulty falling and/or staying asleep. Symptoms include daytime sleepiness, fatigue, poor concentration, decreased alertness, muscle aches, depression and an over-emotional state. Most of us experience occasional insomnia due to stress, illness, temporary pain or disruption in sleep/wake cycles. When the problem continues long enough to interfere with daily life, consultation with a health professional is needed. Health conditions such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, gastrointestinal disorders, pain and congestive heart failure or emphysema can cause insomnia.
On the day of your study, you will check in at the Sleep Disorder Center located on EASTAR Health System’s East campus (formerly Muskogee Communicy Hospital- a campus of Muskogee Regional Medical Center).
In preparation for your appointment, please:
- Avoid caffeine products such as coffee, tea, soda or chocolate after 10 a.m.
- Do not take any daytime naps.
- Bring any medications with you that you need to take at bedtime. (The Sleep Lab does not have access to any medications.)
- Bring appropriate clothing for sleeping.
- Bring items you will need in the evening and in the morning such as toothbrush and other toiletries, contact lens cases and solutions, and clothes.
- Do not use any products on your hair or skin after showering.
