One of the best examples of our devotion to our community is our on-site training center. The training center is 4,300 square foot area dedicated to education. The training center consists of a large area for class discussion and group training, a mock-up patient room, a mock up emergency room and a mock up operating room. Each of these rooms was built to the same specifications as the rooms in the hospital. Each room also has the use of simulation mannequins, which are advanced patient simulators for individual and team training. The simulation mannequin has realistic anatomy and clinical functionality, allowing nurses and students to practice clinical and decision-making skills.
Now that the hospital is open, the training center has been extended for use to the five nursing programs in the Muskogee area: Bacone College, Connors State College, Indian Capital Career Tech, Northeastern State University and Oklahoma Wesleyan University. The students will have the ability to: practice skills such as IV insertion and removal, wound care, blood pressure measurement, inserting and removing trach tubes, and PICC line insertion and removal. The students and teacher of the five higher learning institutions have access to state of the art equipment. The educator has access to case studies and scenarios for use with the patient simulator. The scenarios address the major learning objectives of the American Heart Association’s Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) interventions. Through use of the facility, nursing students will have the knowledge and skills to deploy the interventions that will treat cardiac arrest and other life threatening medical emergencies.
The training center will be used to benefit the public community as well. Muskogee Community Hospital has made arrangements for the American Red Cross and the Muskogee County EMS to use the facility for public outreach. The Red Cross will use the training center to teach basic life support courses, while EMS will use the facility to provide further training to EMT’s. Many other avenues of training are also being explored. Upcoming programs include summer camp courses for middle school and high school students interested in entering the medical field, as well as public awareness courses for heart disease, diabetes and cancer. The facility will provide opportunities for education in our community to nurses, doctors, teachers and students both young and old!
Quality
Muskogee Community Hospital commits to deliver safety and quality in all aspects of our endeavor including clinical services, operations, and customer service. We continuously measure, monitor, and improve performance.
MCH staff members and physicians are highly trained and engaged in always seeking better ways to do things. Associates meet routinely to examine and deal with any emerging issues regarding safety, service, and satisfaction. Patients and/or patient families are asked to provide feedback on their experiences at MCH. All of this means better, safer care and a higher level of service for you, the patient.
MCH is accredited by The Joint Commission and participates in the Hospital Quality Initiative of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The data gathered through these programs regarding MCH’s quality performance is readily available to the community.
In the end our goal is not only to deliver that safe, effective, and high quality care, but also to demonstrate those outcomes to you through our openness in sharing our performance data.
Environment
Muskogee Community Hospital (MCH) is the first Hospital in the nation to earn LEED-Gold for New Construction. This recognition of energy efficiency and design allowed MCH an opportunity to improve environmental quality through green planning, design, and construction as well as operations and maintenance practices. MCH is working in accordance with the American Hospital Association’s voluntary agreement with the EPA to reduce waste volume and toxicity through green practices. MCH embraces the three principles of healthy buildings;
Protect the immediate health of building occupants,
Protect the health of the surrounding community, and
Protect the resources and health of the global community.
The LEED process included many of the aspects of construction as well as facility operations. Many aspects will be studied to establish the best facility and its operations. Some of those aspects include water and energy efficiency and conservation, reduction in pollutant emissions, renewable materials, and construction waste management.
MCH is continuing to improve techniques that have traditionally had negative effects on the indoor environment. MCH is focused on eliminating materials identified as allergens, mutagens, carcinogens and endocrine disrupters because of their profound effect on patients, staff and visitors. In addition, the hospital is climate controlled by a geothermal heating and cooling system to provide the best thermal air quality. This geothermal system very efficiently uses the earth’s sub grade temperature to begin the heating and cooling process.
MCH also utilizes a self-contained water treatment facility that will conserve water and be used for site irrigation. During construction, MCH used recycled materials to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. The recycling program continues now that the hospital is in operation. Finally, the entire MCH campus is smoke-free to provide an atmosphere that is healthy and encourages rapid patient recovery and staff productivity.
Technology
Muskogee Community Hospital (MCH) optimizes use of technology to foster safe, high-quality care for patients. This commitment to technology begins with providing a complete electronic medical record (EMR) that is secure and HIPAA compliant. Below are just a few of the ways an EMR benefits you.
Your caregivers will have immediate access to critical clinical data to make rapid decisions about your care needs.
Even while under the care of a specialist in the hospital, with your permission your primary care physician can access your data from his or her office and keep up with your health.
Your care will be safer. Your allergies, current medications, and history will be clearly visible to everyone who cares for you thereby reducing the chance that newly ordered medications or treatments can have an adverse interactive effect.
Your caregivers will have more time to spend with you. The EMR relieves caregivers of many administrative tasks that take them away from what they really want to do: spend time with you at the bedside.
In addition to the EMR, MCH deploys the following technology advances.
MCH has fully digital imaging (x-ray) equipment, ensuring that the images are high quality and making it possible for those images to be remotely viewed by specialists or easily transmitted to a new physician you may wish to visit.
Patient monitoring equipment, such as blood pressure cuffs, link to the EMR, allowing information that caregivers documented manually in the past to be automatically recorded in the patient’s record. This ensures accuracy of information and translates into more time that the caregiver can spend with patients.
The facility has a wireless network, permitting the staff flexibility to move to patients around the facility.
Through a guest wireless network, patients and visitors have ready access to the internet and their personal email to keep up with family, friends, and business.
Customized and timely patient education and health information are delivered directly to patients through the internet and the televisions in their rooms. MCH never deploys technology for the sake of technology. It is always in service to providing better health outcomes and a better service experience for our patients.
